Growing many plants in a small floor space will be more successful if you use a wall system that provides for drainage yet has a moisture-retentive potting soil. Plant from seed or use vegetative pack plants that have already been grown, making sure the plants are able to touch and tap into fresh soil within the container system. To maintain the look of the system, allow the plants to fully mature before harvesting. Only harvest about one-third of the plants at a time, allowing them to fully regrow before harvesting a second and third time within the season. By leaving part of the growth available in this rotating harvesting method, the garden will continue to function as an energy-saving living wall. Once you harvest all the plants at the end of the season, you will have pulled the energy-saving benefits out of the soil.
